The Mystery of Tea, Coffee, and Calcium: Benefits, Risks, and Chemical Reactions You Need to Know

 Tannic acid and chlorogenic acid, two common phenolic acid compounds in tea and coffee, have chemical reactions with lime (calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide) that depend on the particular practical conditions. Not all acids in tea or coffee interact with lime, however, if a reaction occurs, calcium salts and water will be formed. The calcium salts (Ca^2+) produced are generally considered safe and even beneficial for health, because calcium is essential for the body, especially for the formation of bones, teeth and other biological functions.

Although calcium is important, the solubility of calcium salts in water has limits, and high calcium concentrations can cause calcium deposits such as coral or chalk. This can cause damage to household appliances and reduce water flow efficiency.

People with kidney problems or certain health conditions may need to limit their calcium intake. This setting should be done based on a doctor's advice and not because calcium in drinking water is dangerous. Excessive consumption of calcium from water and food can cause hypercalcemia, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or heart problems.

In general, most people can safely consume calcium in their drinking water and daily foods without significant health risks. Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and calcium oxide (CaO) are harmless at low levels in drinking water. Although both can be used in water treatment, excessive use should be avoided to avoid health and technical problems. Proper control of the amount of calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide in water is important to comply with applicable health and water quality standards.

When discussing calcium salts, keep in mind that their full name is calcium chloride (CaCl2). This salt is formed from the reaction between calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide and hydrochloric acid or other compounds that contain chloride ions. Calcium salts, which are soluble in water, provide calcium ions that are essential for many biological processes and daily life. However, the term "calcium salt" can refer to a variety of compounds formed from calcium and other anions in a general context.
