High cholesterol and high uric acid are two separate conditions with different causes and effects. However, both can be associated with similar diseases, such as heart disease. The following is an explanation of each condition:
High cholesterol:
·
High cholesterol can occur due to a combination
of genetic and lifestyle factors, including a diet rich in saturated and trans
fats, physical inactivity, being overweight and smoking.
·
High cholesterol causes plaque buildup on the
artery walls, which is called atherosclerosis. Plaque can narrow arteries and
restrict blood flow, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke and other
cardiovascular problems.
·
Left untreated, high cholesterol can lead to
serious conditions such as coronary heart disease.
High uric acid:
·
High uric acid occurs when the body produces
excess uric acid or is unable to remove it efficiently through the kidneys.
·
The main cause of high uric acid is the consumption
of foods high in purines, such as red meat, seafood and alcohol, as well as
genetic factors.
· The buildup of uric acid in the body can lead to
the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints and surrounding tissues,
resulting in inflammation and pain which is called gout or rheumatic gout.
·
If left untreated or controlled, high uric acid
can cause joint damage, kidney stones and other health complications.
Although high cholesterol and high uric acid can contribute
to the development of cardiovascular disease, the causes and effects are
different. High cholesterol can cause atherosclerosis and increase the risk of
heart disease, while high uric acid causes gout attacks and can exacerbate
existing heart disease.
It is important to keep cholesterol and uric acid levels
within normal ranges through healthy lifestyle changes, medication prescribed
by a doctor, and management of any underlying health conditions. If you have
concerns about high cholesterol or high uric acid, it is advisable to consult a
doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.
